I’m Not Usually One For Dream Analysis, But…

… I sure had a doozy last night (don’t worry, it was totally family-friendly).

Before going to bed, I spent about an hour and a half reading work of Tom “Bald Dog” Varjan’s, on consulting, structure, clients, you name it. It was with Varjan’s concepts swirling in my head that I laid down to sleep last night.

That said, I’d be curious to hear what you’d make of this one:

I was at a workshop of some kind (as a participant, not a facilitator), in a semi-nice, yet semi-cheesy hotel conference room, with wood-paneled walls and bad carpeting. There were at least ten other participants, but it was clear that all the focus, in that moment, was on me.

The teacher up front was one of my old spiritual healing teachers, and he had an assistant: a woman he was clearly training, but who was obviously interested in doing her own thing.

In fact, when he left the room, she started prancing about, waving her hands, trying to tell me all about myself and my business. She looked like a red-haired pigeon with gas pains. And despite her theatrics, her advice told me nil about my business.

When my old teacher comes back in the room, he starts telling me all about my business, too. But like the pigeon-lady, nothing he said really felt accurate, useful, or germane to my work.

And then, my marketing teacher, Sean D’Souza, who I took a year-long course with in 2006, takes the stage. And he proceeds to lay out the big questions in my mind, along with some big answers.

And it all makes sense. A huge dialogue ensued, the whiteboard got filled up with diagrams and bullet points, and within three minutes, I was more clear than lucite about what to do with my business.

But then, the group breaks for lunch, and before I can get to my notebook, someone erased the whiteboard, with all our notes on it. Adios, info.

I was upset for a moment, but then I realized that I had understood everything I needed to understand. The clarity was in my heart, so I didn’t need notes.

As I walked out of the conference room, I woke up.

So, dream interpreters, what’s going on there?

The people represented in my dreams were clearly metaphorical; the things they said weren’t things they would normally say (well, not all of them, at least). And yet, each one’s presence in the dream was just as clearly a sign.

I take it all to mean that I’m moving in some very new directions in my work, and not to look to the past. I’m just starting to talk about some of these new epiphanies, so you can expect more of them to come soon, I’m sure.

Still, I’d be curious to hear if any of you have some insights you could share from your perspective — it’d be fun, at least, if not illuminating!

    Adam:

No responses yet?! Ok, I’ll bite (it’s what psychologists Do, eh?). ;-) — I love dream interpretations!

First — just for the record, to interpret your dream properly, we’d need to know your personal associations with each of the elements. But we won’t make you go there ;-) .

Having said that, I would in general agree with your own interpretation, plus a bit.

Another first principle: All the elements in your dream represent aspects of yourself. We “borrow” our experiences and people from our life to create a message we can “get”. It’s related to the way the brain processes information — all in networks of connected bits — but that’s another story….sorry.

Presumably for you, a workshop is linked with learning — applied learning. The first two “teachers” – bits of yourself you learn from — are coming from a *primarily* spiritual healing perspective. And it’s not connecting to what you need to know/do for your business.

Then along comes the “pragmatic”, do-what-works, part of yourself that has incorporated the practical lessons of applied marketing. And voila. It makes sense – it fits.

But then comes the really nice part. You aren’t left with the message that it’s “Sean” that knows best. You seem to have integrated your “Sean” side with all the other elements that make up the Adam you are today so that you have confidence that the answers are in your Heart.

Moral of the story — you need to listen to the pragmatic bits as well as (and maybe a bit more right now??) your history of spiritual bits and then everything will flow.

Caveat: Everything above may be totally wrong. ;-)

    Waiting for the next installment….;-)

    Thanks for stepping in, Karen!

“listen to the pragmatic bits as well as (and maybe a bit more right now??) your history of spiritual bits and then everything will flow.”

    You said it. :-)

That sounds pretty right on to me; the summary at the end just nailed it, too.

    (and the caveat: perfect!)

Oops — wrong place to advertise ;-)
